Chapter Twenty

Stevie

Stevie woke at sunrise and sat straight up in her bed. Images of witches, pirates, and projectile cars flashed through her mind. She shook her head, banishing the absurd thoughts.

It had to have been a dream.

She stretched and slipped out of bed so she could get ready for Charlie’s first day of school. She’d been dreading it, but at least she knew it was real. After a quick shower, she dressed in a white t-shirt and a pair of faded jeans.

On the way out of her bedroom, a ray of sunlight shone through the window, causing an unexpected sparkle to catch her eye. She took a step back to get a better look at the source of the glimmer. It took only a second for her to recognize the item and understand what its presence meant.

Breathless, Stevie crept toward her dresser and scooped the smooth oblong piece of amber into her trembling hand. As she closed her fist around the stone, she realized that everything that had happened the day before, everything she so desperately wanted to deny, was real. She slipped the protective talisman into her pocket and left the room.

Stevie walked into Charlie’s room to wake him. The rising sun had not yet lit his bedroom because his blackout curtains were still drawn.

She padded across the floor to one of the windows and opened the thick navy blue curtains. As the morning light filled the room, she turned to wake her son. But he was not in his bed.

Seized with panic, she raced to the bathroom in the hall, hoping to find him there. But he wasn’t.

She thought of Vanessa and the speeding car.

“Charlie!” She ran down the stairs in search of her son. “Charlie!”

“He’s in here,” Dylan answered from the kitchen.

Her frantic pace slowed. She took a deep breath, hoping to calm her racing heart, and smelled the unmistakable scent of fried eggs and fresh coffee.

In the kitchen, Charlie sat in his usual seat, his tablet close by. She smiled as she watched him shovel a forkful into his mouth. She took a closer look at his plate and noticed that both of his eggs had broken yolks that were cooked firm, just the way he liked them.

Dylan cracked another egg and dropped the contents into the sizzling pan.

“Wow! You didn’t have to do all this.” Stevie gestured to the meal.

“First day of school, right? He needs a good breakfast to start the day.” Dylan pointed to the pan with a spatula. “This is brain food.”

“For someone who didn’t get any sleep last night, you sure are perky.” Stevie poured herself a cup of coffee.

“I’m fine.” He turned the egg over in the pan. “I’ll grab a nap later. No big deal.”

Stevie rested her coffee mug on the tile-topped table and walked over to Charlie’s red backpack hanging on the laundry room door. She reached into her pocket and removed the amber stone Patricia had given her. Running her thumb across its smooth surface, she remembered its purpose.
